Delta Conveyance Project

Water is essential to our daily lives, from the water that flows from your faucet to the farms that grow our food and the businesses that drive our economy. In Southern California, much of that water comes from hundreds of miles away, delivered through a system known as the State Water Project. This system provides water to 27 million Californians, including nearly 1 million people in Western Water’s service area.

California is advancing a major improvement called the Delta Conveyance Project to help protect this water supply and prepare for future challenges.

Here's the latest update.

Governor Newsom has introduced legislation to streamline the review and permitting process for the Delta Conveyance Project. The proposal would:

  • Speed up progress while maintaining strong environmental protections.
  • Save hundreds of millions of dollars by avoiding unnecessary delays.
  • Help water agencies across the state make more informed and timely investment decisions.

Why this matters to you

Whether you are a resident, a business owner, or someone who cares about the future of your community, having a reliable and affordable water supply is critical.

Here is what is at stake:

  • In wet years, the State Water Project can provide up to half of Southern California’s water.
  • A state study shows water deliveries could drop by 23 percent over the next 20 years without action.
  • Delaying improvements could lead to stricter water restrictions, increased costs, and greater uncertainty during droughts.

The Delta Conveyance Project is a smart investment that helps ensure water is available when we need it, regardless of weather or emergency.

Stay informed and engaged.

Why is this project needed and important?

The Delta Conveyance Project is a critical investment to help protect and enhance water supply reliability from the state's single largest water supply, the Sierra snowpack. New tunnels could safely transport water supplies if an earthquake or other disaster collapses the 50-year-old Delta levee system. The tunnels could also capture and store more water when it's available. It's an economically smart solution to our state's water problem.
