RIVERSIDE, Calif. – With temperatures rising, California’s water reserves dropping and Smart Irrigation Month coming to an end, Western Municipal Water District has not only done a variety of things to celebrate water efficiency in July, the agency also continues to look for ways to help the region save water.
Western’s making it easy for customers to be mindful of water use with the popular water-efficient Free Sprinkler Nozzles.com Program (FSN). The program has more than 20 counties across California taking part and nearly 1 million water-efficient nozzles distributed to date. Expected to save more than 5 billion gallons of water over a five-year period, the FSN program provides participants up to 25 free Toro® Precision™ Spray Nozzles.
“The regional FreeSprinklerNozzle.com program gives everyone the opportunity to be water-wise in their landscapes, even during the hot summer months,” said Tim Barr, water use efficiency manager. “Using high efficiency nozzles helps distribute water more evenly, which cuts down on waste.”
The hottest month of the year, typically July, is when outdoor water use peaks; it was christened Smart Irrigation Month in 2005 by the Irrigation Association, a leading membership organization for irrigation equipment and system manufacturers, dealers, distributors, designers, consultants, contractors and end users.
Gov. Jerry Brown in a written statement recently invited all Californians to be water smart and “practice more sustainable water consumption, whether it be watering the lawn less frequently, constructing a drip irrigation system for the garden or upgrading existing systems with smart irrigation controllers.”
During the month, Western provided additional outreach and education to its customers and the community through its publications, website and social media.
Barr added that outdoor water demand soars along with the high temperatures in July and August, so people need to give more attention to their landscape. Being smart with irrigation practices and having the right irrigation products during this critical time can save lots of water and only requires a small change to daily life.
“The FreeSprinklerNozzles.com program is a prime example of our continued focus on programs that save our region money and valuable water supply,” said Western General Manager John Rossi.
