Western’s Lois B. Krieger Water Project Grants for Educators Encourages Learning
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – California public school funding continues to face challenges. Increasing costs to sustain technology and resources leaves many schools no choice but to limit classroom spending. Annually, Western continues to support classroom projects, focused on water education, by offering grant funding. This year alone, Western is assisting Riverside county schools with nearly $12,000 going directly into the hands of the teachers for their students’ learning.
Western announced 21 recipients of this year’s Lois B. Krieger Water Project Grants for Educators. This past fall, teachers from Murrieta, Wildomar, Lake Elsinore, Corona and Riverside submitted applications for water-related projects with objectives and explanations on the benefits to the students and their school.
“This year’s submissions have been exceptionally creative,” shared Western’s Deputy General Manager Craig Miller. “In addition to several water-quality analysis projects and water-efficient gardens, we received a variety of applications with projects focusing on new lesson concepts.”
Some of this year’s projects include Earth Science Teacher Anna Foutz, from John W. North High School, teaching her students about the effects of fertilizer-runoff entering the water table. Stephanie Hobbs, from David A. Brown Middle School, will take a social studies approach by focusing on water being the only natural resource that touches all aspects of global civilization. Teachers will receiving their funding in January and will begin their water lessons when students return from winter break. Many of the items purchased with grant funding will be used year-after-year and will continue to serve as a resource for local schools.
