RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Western’s Lois B. Krieger Endowed Scholarship at California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) has been awarded to student Malcolm Thomas in the amount of $1,419. Thomas, who recently earned his B.S. in Biology at UC Riverside, will be pursuing his M.S. in Earth and Environmental Science at CSUSB. According to CSUSB officials, one of his motivating factors is to contribute to the world in a positive way. Thomas plans to work as a professional geologist and then pursue a Ph.D.
“It’s an honor to present Malcolm with this scholarship. He’s a deserving student who has demonstrated interest in the environment and how to help others,” said John Rossi. “With students struggling to pay for education costs, it’s a real privilege for Western to award a hard-working student with a merit that holds the namesake of Lois B. Krieger, a pioneer for women in the water industry.”
Thomas was recognized for his acceptance of the Krieger Scholarship at Western’s Board meeting Jan. 15. "I deeply appreciate that Western Municipal Water District has helped me in pursuing my goal to become a geologist. Thanks to the scholarship, I will be able make it to the next level," he explained.
The Lois B. Krieger CSUSB Endowed Scholarship was named in honor of a true leader in water, Lois Krieger. Krieger served on Western’s Board for many years and as Western’s representative to the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California Board of Directors for more than two decades. Holding the position as the first woman president for the Association of California Water Agencies, Krieger was instrumental in developing a comprehensive water policy, “Water for Californians.” She retired in 2001 after a 25-year career dedicated to solving water issues locally, regionally and throughout the state.
The scholarship program is just one of Western’s many educational programs that are dedicated to teaching students about the importance of water and water use efficiency. Other educational programs include the District’s school assembly programs, resource materials, Solar Cup competition, tours and Krieger Grants.
