RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Make mom’s special day memorable this weekend with a visit to Western’s Landscapes Southern California StyleSM garden in honor of National Public Gardens Day. National Public Gardens Day falls annually on the Friday before Mother’s Day, which is May 9 this year. It’s a day of awareness inviting communities across North America to visit and learn about the important role that public gardens play in their lives.
“Our garden has a plethora of beautiful water-wise plants that demonstrate how to use water wisely,” said Tim Barr, water use efficiency manager. “We also offer numerous classes throughout the year that educate and inspire visitors to use less water outdoors while maintaining an attractive outdoor landscape.”
In celebration of National Public Gardens Day as well as May as Water Awareness Month, Western is hosting a gardening workshop at Landscapes Southern California StyleSM on Saturday, May 10, from 11 a.m. to noon. Saturday’s class, “Edible Flowers,” teaches participants the 10 rules for using edible flowers and is taught by Riverside Master Gardener Jean Weiss.
Western’s water-wise garden is open year-long and serves as a community gathering place where people can meander through the garden, which features more than 250 water-wise plants in a natural setting. Events and garden tours are provided throughout the year, including Western’s signature, award-winning Earth Night in the Garden event that is held each year on Earth Day.
Following the techniques demonstrated in the garden can save up 25 to 40 percent of the water used in landscapes.
Landscapes Southern California StyleSM, 450 E. Alessandro Blvd., Riverside, is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed on major holidays. Admission to the garden is free.
Western Municipal Water District provides water supply, wastewater disposal and water resource management to the public in a safe, reliable, environmentally sensitive and financially responsible manner.
