Expanded Emergency Regulations to Limit Water Use
Riverside, Calif. – With yesterday’s State Water Resources Control Board adoption of an expanded emergency regulation to safeguard California’s remaining water supplies, Western’s General Manager John Rossi was quick to support the action.
“Western will continue to help our customers remain extremely efficient in water use, particularly in the outdoors where the majority of residential water is used,” Rossi commented. “The District’s per person water use, as measured by the State Water Board, has dropped nearly 30 percent in the last decade. That’s a big water savings and testament to our customers’ commitment to walking the talk of water efficiency,” Rossi explained. “Our community continues to strive for greater water efficiency as demonstrated by the continued high levels of participation in District-offered efficiency programs. As Californians, we all need to be focused on being water-wise whether in drought or not."
Western is reviewing the new regulations to assure compliance and will be modifying the District’s Water Supply Shortage Contingency Plan as appropriate. Western’s water budget rates, which are industry leading, have contributed greatly to compliance with State requirements.
In addition, Western has already begun plans to reach out to restaurants and other food service establishments to assist in their now required efforts to only serve water to customers upon request. The District will also reach out to operators of hotels and motels in the retail service area who must now provide guests with the option of choosing not to have towels and linens laundered daily and prominently display notice of this option.
