Riverside, Calif. – As water issues continue to be at the forefront of local, statewide and national importance, Western Municipal Water District is committed to educating and inspiring students to be the next generation of leaders in water. This week, an agreement was finalized to provide an endowment for a scholarship in the amount of $20,000 at the Riverside Community College District (RCCD) Foundation for local students studying water and related fields.
“Now’s the time to get the future generation thinking about the opportunity of working in water,” said John Rossi, general manager of Western. “RCCD is a regional gateway to higher education for many students and a place where they will receive the skills they need to pursue careers in water and other areas related to its importance.”
The endowment will fund two annual $500 scholarships at RCCD, one at Riverside City College and one at Norco College. Through the continued partnership, the scholarships will provide assistance to students who reside in western Riverside County and attend Riverside City College or Norco College and will be open to qualified applicants starting the 2015-16 school year. Students interested in applying must meet a requirement of a 3.0 GPA and demonstrate financial need.
The student’s focus of study must be water and can include policy, public administration, water management or conservation. Interested applicants can find out more info on the scholarship by visiting RCCD’s Financial Aid Office.
Western has a history of partnering with the RCCD, including sponsoring both the Norco College Water Demonstration Garden and Riverside City College Community Garden. These highly popular gardens support college curricula in environmental science, botany, chemistry and biology.
Western Municipal Water District provides water supply, wastewater disposal and water resource management to the public in a safe, reliable, environmentally sensitive and financially responsible manner.
