Western Municipal Water District and the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Riverside County Master Gardener Program have teamed up to hold three free gardening workshops through the end of summer and into fall, which is one of the best times for planting outdoors.
The workshops will be presented on the second Saturday of each month in Western’s water-efficiency garden, Landscapes Southern California Stylesm in Riverside.
Workshops are scheduled on the following Saturdays:
Sept. 10, 11 a.m. - “Gardening Month-to-Month in Your Southern California Garden.” Laura Simpson, UCCE Master Gardener, will provide guidelines as to when to plant, propagate, fertilize, prune and more in your Inland Empire garden.
Oct. 8, 11 a.m. - “Cool Season Vegetable Gardening.” Cool season vegetables can give months of fresh, tasty produce. Christine Lampe, UCCE Master Gardener, will help you plan your cool season vegetable garden. She will highlight perennial vegetables such as artichokes and asparagus which can provide you with years of delicious, healthy bounty.
Nov. 12, 11 a.m. - “California Native Plants for Your Landscape.” Drought tolerant, pest resistant, easy care and beautiful…the description of a California native plant! Susan Jett of the California Native Plant Society will share her vast knowledge of native plants and suggest some of the best California native plants for the Inland Empire region.
Landscapes Southern California Stylesm showcases California native and climate-appropriate plants as well as the irrigation systems that improve a landscape’s water-saving ability. The garden is located at 450 E. Alessandro Blvd., Riverside, at the corner of Mission Grove Parkway. It’s open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Tours of the garden are available Wednesday through Saturday for groups of eight or more adults, including high school student groups. Tours are led by UCCE Riverside County Master Gardeners. A tour request can be submitted at www.wmwd.com/index.aspx?nid=124.
