Scholarships assist students with undergraduate water-related degrees.
Riverside, CA – Western Municipal Water District recently awarded local students Cynthia Mejia (second from right), Christopher Hooks (fourth from left) and Amanda Penicks (not present at presentation) $500 scholarships as part of the District’s partnership with local colleges and universities to encourage water- and environmental-related studies.
“These students are the next leaders in water and related fields,” said John Rossi, general manager of Western Municipal Water District. “It’s always been our goal to assist students in our community that will likely be driving decisions on preserving our precious natural resources in the future.”
To earn this distinction, University of California, Riverside (UCR), student Cynthia Mejia stood out for focusing her graduate studies on water policy. Riverside Community College District (RCCD) student Christopher Hooks was selected for his dedication to the fight against environmental degradation and RCCD student Amanda Penicks for her desire to use her studies in agriculture and environmental sciences for the betterment of government agencies.
In addition to studies revolving around water and environmental issues, each recipient must carry a minimum 3.0 grade point average and demonstrate a need for financial assistance. One $500 UCR Charles D. Field Scholarship is awarded annually, and RCCD awards two $500 scholarships on an annual basis.
This collaboration with UCR and RCCD is just one example of Western’s dedication to encouraging water leaders of the future. In addition to the UCR and RCCD scholarships, Western also provides the Lois B. Krieger scholarship for students studying water or a related field at California State University, San Bernardino.
