[ARCHIVED] Celebrate National Public Gardens Day with Mom at Western’s Garden

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Looking for something to do with your mom, sister, friend or child on Mother’s Day weekend? How about a visit to Western’s Landscapes Southern California StyleSM garden in honor of National Public Gardens Day, Friday, May 10? National Public Gardens Day falls on the Friday before Mother’s Day annually. It’s day of awareness inviting communities across North America to visit and learn about the important role that public gardens play in their lives.

“Our garden has an attractive water-wise pallet of plants that can be enjoyed every day,” said Tim Barr, water use efficiency manager. “We also offer numerous landscape classes throughout the year that educate and inspire visitors.”

In celebration of National Public Gardens Day as well as May as Water Awareness Month, Western is hosting two gardening workshops at Landscapes Southern California StyleSM on Saturday, May 11. Saturday’s classes include “Herbs: How to Grow and Use Them” from 11 a.m. to noon followed by “Heirloom Seeds: The Perfect Start for Your Organic Garden” from 1 to 2 p.m. Classes are free to attend.

Western’s water-wise garden is open year-long and serves as a community gathering place where people can meander through the garden, which features more than 250 water-wise plants in a natural setting. Events and garden tours are provided throughout the year, including Western’s signature Earth Night in the Garden event held each year on Earth Day.

Following the techniques demonstrated in the garden can save up 25 to 40 percent of the water used in landscapes. Landscapes Southern California StyleSM, 450 E. Alessandro Blvd., Riverside, is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed on major holidays. Admission to the garden is free.

Western Municipal Water District provides water supply, wastewater disposal and water resource management to the public in a safe, reliable, environmentally sensitive and financially responsible manner.
